Moorhead Fire & Rescue employs 32 people in two capacities, Line and Staff.

Line Personnel

Our 27 "Line" personnel work 24-hour shifts for an average of 56 hours per week on the "fire line" (their major responsibility is emergency response.)  We provide continuous fire protection by working 3 shifts of 9 people in rotation.  An example of one of our previous shift calendars demonstrates how we work.  A-Shift is green, B-Shift is white, and C-shift is red.

Each shift consists of four positions.  An Assistant Chief is in charge of overall operations, all staff on duty that day, and oversees the Headquarters Station.  A Lieutenant is in charge of the South Station and the people working there.  An Acting Officer is designated for each shift.  This person is one of the top three Fire Fighters that has tested for promotion to Lieutenant. There are also an additional 6 Fire Fighters that rotate between both stations.

The South Station is staffed with 3 or 4 personnel based upon total staffing that day.  The Headquarters Station carries the balance of on-duty personnel that day, from 3 to 5 total.  Up to 2 people per shift may be on vacation at any given time.  People also may be on leave for illness, or out of town training.  Our current minimum staffing on shift is 7, with 4 being at Headquarters and 3 at the South Station.

Staff Personnel

Our "Staff" personnel work a traditional 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, 8am to 4:30pm.  Their major responsibility is to operate as "support staff" for those working on the line.  While they are not primarily involved in emergency operations, they make it possible for line personnel to do their jobs and provide the leadership necessary for the department to function.

We have a Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, Training Director, and 2 Office Specialists.  Everyone but the Training Director works in the Remley Annex, on office building built next to and connecting to the Headquarters Station. The Training Director works out of an office at Headquarters.

TEAMWORK

While it appears that there is a great deal of separation between our 2 categories of personnel, we all work very well together.  The true difference is that there are a few more people here Monday through Friday during normal work hours.

Our department also holds regular Officers' Meetings where the officers from all three shifts and the codes office get together to conduct department business and keep open a clear line of communication.
