Jeff Wallin, Moorhead Fire Department

Moorhead crews responded to a reported fire on the roof of the AmericInn, 600 30th Avenue South at 5:30pm this afternoon.  Smoke was reported by a maintenance worker coming from the second floor roof section around an air handling unit.  Smoke was also reported in the atrium area and prompted evacuation of Hotel guests and employees.

Crews pictured above opened up the air handler to find refrigerant leaking from a pipe assembly.  The smoke inside was also confirmed to be vaporized coolant.

Off-duty firefighters were dispatched as well due to the initial reports of fire and smoke, but were held back at the stations about 15 minutes into the incident.

No injuries were reported.
