New Driver Training Standards

April 9th, 2007

A new quarterly training program started today following NFPA 1002 Apparatus Driver Operator Qualifications.  The topic of training this week was "Close Quarters Maneuvering."

Many agencies recommend training quarterly as part of a comprehensive program touching on a variety of subjects.  Close Quarters training teaches the Driver/Operator to learn how the apparatus corners, how to use mirrors while traveling forward and backing, and learn where all four corners of the apparatus are at all times.  These skills are invaluable when negotiating tight spaces under stress during an emergency.

We set up a four part course in the North parking lot at the Youth Hockey Arena.
Resetting a hit cone in the diminishing alley (it gets narrower as you pass through).
The driver must judge if the apparatus can clear the adjustable vertical height prop.
Two operator of the vertical height prop stand by with adjustment poles.
Engine 1 will not clear at this setting.
Can't wait to see 'em hit a cone.
Engine 1 enters the alley.
I think he smashed a cone.
Yes, he did.
He smashed it good.
Cutting it close.
The alley diminishes.
