Icy roads and blowing snow contributed to more than 25 accidents on Minnesota highways in the area Thursday, including an early-morning rollover on Interstate 94 in Moorhead that left a Kentucky man dead.

Joseph W. Cox, 48, of La Grange was pronounced dead at Fargo’s Innovis Health after being thrown from a vehicle westbound on I-94, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The accident occurred across from the Moorview Soccer Complex.

Robert L. Houston, 67, of Bedford, Ky., the driver of the vehicle, was taken to Innovis with serious injuries after also being thrown from the vehicle, the patrol said.

An Innovis spokeswoman said she could not release information on Houston’s condition late Thursday night.

Of the 25 Minnesota accidents – mostly on Interstate 94 between Alexandria and Moorhead – four involved minor injuries and 11 were rollovers, said communications operator Darwin Lusty. The patrol responded to at least 16 cars in ditches, he said.

“It’s very icy,” Lusty said. “People are just driving over the safe driving speed.”

Moorhead police responded to 11 accidents from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m., including two rollovers and two hit-and-runs in parking lots, Sgt. Brad Penas said.

A female teenager was cited for failing to yield or failing to stop, after a two-vehicle accident about 4:40 p.m. at the intersection of 37th Avenue and Fifth Street South in Moorhead, Penas said.

The teenager, whose name was not available, was taken to Innovis with minor injures, Penas said.

Twenty-two accidents were reported in Fargo between midnight and about 9:20 p.m., Sgt. Greg Lemke said.

The National Weather Service in Grand Forks, N.D., issued a winter weather advisory through early today.

One to two inches of snow is forecast for eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. Winds of 15 to 25 mph may cause snow to blow or drift over icy roads, according to the weather service.

Partly cloudy skies and highs in the low teens are forecast for the weekend. Temperatures are ex-pected to reach 10 degrees Saturday and 9 degrees Sunday.

Next week, temperatures are projected to reach the mid- to upper teens through Thursday.
