A fire at a Moorhead business Sunday morning could have been much worse if not for the building’s emergency sprinkler system.

Moorhead firefighters responded to a fire at Pactiv, 3010 42nd St. S., about 11:15 a.m.

The fire started in the business’ receiving storage area, which contained bundles of paper, said Assistant Fire Chief Joe Gaughan.

“There was quite a fire load there, but thankfully they had a sprinkler system and the sprinkler system worked fine,” he said.

Pactiv produces specialty packaging products for the consumer and foodservice/food packaging markets, according to its Web site.

Firefighters contained the fire, which caused minimal damage to the building’s structure, Gaughan said.

“A lot of paper got damaged, but I think that because they use recycled paper, they can still use it in their process,” he said.

The cause of the fire was undetermined Sunday night.
