Gas leak forces apartment evacuations

Firefighters evacuated three apartment buildings on Moorhead’s south side Wednesday after a contractor ruptured a natural gas line.

Moorhead Fire Marshal Rich Duysen said the contractor hit a 2-inch line at 9:24 a.m. at 30th Avenue and Fifth Street South and “from there, there was just a large volume of gas” released.

The line was ruptured in two spots, he said, and the contractor called the Moorhead Fire Department.

There was no wind to dissipate the gas, but since natural gas is lighter than air, it traveled straight up and didn’t pose any danger to nearby buildings, including a motel, Duysen said.

The smell of natural gas was strong in nearby neighborhoods.

There were no injuries. The leak was shut off at 10:12 a.m., Duysen said.
