Live Fire Training on Caddy Avenue

April 21st, 2005

Economic development and redevelopment are considered to be benefits to our community.  One unexpected side-benefit is the opportunity for fire training that presents itself during the process.

Often time the land that a building sits on is more valuable that the combined value of the existing building and property.   When that is the case, the cheapest method of property removal can allow us to obtain invaluable live fire training.

Burning a building in a controlled manner allows us to develop, practice, and refine our firefighting tactics in the most realistic situations possible.  Simulated fires, and classroom discussion are no substitute for the real thing.  The benefits gained by keeping up our skills can make a life-saving difference when battling a real blaze.

Before we conduct live fire training, the building must be examined by State approved Inspectors to remove hazards such as asbestos and mercury.  We notify area resident before training begins.  Fire exercises are only conducted when wind and humidity conditions make it safe for the neighborhood.

In some cases, where certain hazardous conditions exist, like structural instability, certain types of asbestos, and proximity to other buildings or trees, it is cheaper or more desirable to have buildings torn down conventionally.

Moorhead Fire & Rescue is always looking for training opportunities.  Please give our Training Division a call at (218) 299-5349 to discuss assisting you with removing unwanted structures from your site.  You may even qualify for a tax rebate.

We conducted live fire training for three days practicing extinguishments of single and multiple rooms, firefighter rescue, differing fire attacks, and large fire attack.
