Dennis Compton Provides Leadership Training

January 29th, 2005

Renowned fire service leadership speaker and Chief of the Mesa Arizona Fire Department, Denny Compton met with members of our Department at the Hjemkomst Center to help us adopt and implement a Customer Service mentality and develop the leadership potential of our members and the department as a whole.

Future follow-up sessions are planned to gauge our progress and help us set goals for the future.

Here's some biographical information as fount on IFSTA's web site.

Dennis Compton

Dennis has served for more than 34 years in the fire service -- 27 years with the Phoenix Fire Department, where he was Assistant Fire Chief, and five years as the Mesa, Arizona Chief. In 2002, he retired as Chief, and now serves as an Executive Advisor to many organizations. He continues to serve on several National Boards of Directors, as either the Chair or as a member. Fire departments and professional organizations have recognized Chief Compton locally and nationally for his leadership ability. He has been an educator for over 20 years and has taught leadership and management at colleges, universities, private corporations, and conferences throughout the United States.

Dennis’ consistent message is that we can study all the complex management and leadership models ever developed, but there are basic elements of organizational and individual behavior that we must address daily if these models have a chance at long-term success. An organization is the people in it...it is not an abstract object. If we hire capable, committed people, support them, provide a good work foundation, apply standard management principles, communicate an enthusiastic sense of direction, and position everyone in an environment focused on the mission and on their role in meeting it, individuals and groups will behave and perform more effectively.
