In the early morning hours of Christmas Eve, the Moorhead Fire Department
responded to a fire call at 1114 27th Avenue South in Moorhead. After the
last of the fire was extinguished, four of the 18 units in the apartment
were completely gutted, with the remaining 14 suffering moderate to severe
smoke and water damage.
A fire of this magnitude at any time of the year is tragic to the
families affected, but coupled with it happening one day prior to
Christmas, this truly was a catastrophe to the families displaced from
their homes.
On a night with so much devastation taking place it should be noted
that there were several acts of kindness from people and organizations
that should certainly not go unnoticed:
The Salvation Army and its faithful volunteers remained on scene
throughout the entire night providing a warm shelter, hot coffee, and dry
sweatshirts to wet firefighters.
McDonald's restaurant for providing a hot breakfast to the
firefighters in the early morning, following the fire.
Local law enforcement for the help on the scene, and also for their
generosity in taking up a collection to replace toys which were consumed
in the fire.
Sam Skaff, owner of the fire building, for opening his doors over the
holiday season to provide for a collection site for residents to drop off
donations for the displaced fire victims.
Matson Oil and driver Marlo Sloan, for not only staying on scene all
night filling trucks with fuel, but also literally giving the sweatshirt
off his back to a firefighter who was soaking wet in the -15 temperature.
The Red Cross for providing emergency housing and supplies to the fire
victims.
We all feel very proud to live and serve in a community where such
thoughtful and generous people are so willing to give of themselves to
help people through such difficult times. A big thanks to the people
listed above, and we apologize for anyone or organization that we may have
missed.
