The cause of a hay fire between the NP and Main Avenue bridges in Moorhead Sunday night may have been set by someone using a lighter, Moorhead Fire Marshal Rich Duysen said Monday.

Because the fire appeared to have been started in several places, it is suspected someone set the hay on fire using something like a cigarette lighter before taking off on the bike path, he said.

However, the official cause remains undetermined, Duysen said.

Fire destroyed six bales of hay that sat near a bike path on the river’s edge.

The blaze burned for about an hour before firefighters were able to extinguish it about 10:15 p.m.
