Excessive speed and wet roads apparently were factors in a one-vehicle crash that sent five people to the hospital early Saturday, Moorhead police said.

Dustin Bruce Martin, 23, of Fargo, was driving a 1979 Monte Carlo on Fourth Street South when he lost control and struck two boulevard trees at 14th Avenue South, near Riverside Elementary School, Sgt. Dan Griffin said in a press release.

Moorhead police responded to the accident at 2:12 a.m.

Three of the victims had to be removed from the vehicle by Moorhead Fire and Rescue. All five were taken to MeritCare Hospital for injuries.

Martin was listed in guarded condition Saturday afternoon. The names and conditions of the other four victims were not available.

Griffin said it appeared none of the victims was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The vehicle was totaled.

Police wanted to talk to the occupants of a white car -- possibly a Ford Probe -- that was seen in the area of the crash to obtain more information about what happened.
