Our Fire Fighters perform an annual check on each of the ??? (2004) fire hydrants in town.  In the fall the opening and closing device is checked for proper operation and checked for leaks.  Any water in the hydrant due to high water table levels or malfunctions must also be pumped out of the hydrant to assure it doesn't freeze in the winter and is unknowingly unusable if needed during a fire.

During the winter, we assure that each hydrant is accessible, shoveling them out if necessary due to snow accumulation.

Ever wonder why there's an ugly sign post behind each hydrant?

We have maps in each truck showing our approximate locations, but they only get us close or let us know which side of the street we need to be looking. The posts mark the exact location of the hydrant so it can be found in the winter when storms and wind drift snow piles over them.  The reflective signs on top of the posts help in the winter and during night time to quickly locate hydrants during a fire.
