Our Mission

Moorhead Fire and Rescue provides fire suppression, prevention, and investigation, code
enforcement, pre-fire planning, emergency medical care, confined-space and high-level rescue,
patient disentanglement, hazardous materials, hydrant maintenance and other disaster,
emergency, life and property conservation services to the Cites of Moorhead and Georgetown
Minnesota and upon request to surrounding communities. In addition, and in cooperation with
Fargo Fire and the State of Minnesota, Hazardous Materials Response is also provided to Fargo,
North Dakota and a 22 county area of Northwestern Minnesota.

When not providing emergency services, Firefighters daily perform other routine, administrative
and laborious tasks such as training and education, equipment/apparatus repair and
maintenance, code inspections and pre-fire planning.

Staffing includes 21 Firefighters, 3 Lieutenants, 3 Assistant Chiefs, 1 Training Assistant Chief, 1 Fire Chief, and 1 Fire Marshal. The staff are all full-time, serve as call-back staff during larger emergencies, and are supported by and work in conjunction with staff from the neighboring Codes Office.

 

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Firefighters are hired from a eligibility list, prepared and maintained every two years.
Interested applicants may be placed on a notification list and will be contacted shortly before the

Successful applicants will possess a minimum of a Associate Degree in Fire Protection or equivalent experience and or education, National Registry EMT Certification, Hazardous Materials Technician  education and Valid personal drivers license. Applicants must complete a written exam, used to develop a ranking score. A preset quantity or top finishers will be required to complete a pass/fail physical agility
test based on the Phoenix Fire Department test. As openings occur the current top three
applicants will report for an oral interview. Immediately prior to hiring, applicants must pass
background checks and physical exam/medical survey.

Past practice has shown that all officers with the exception of our current Chief have been promoted from within the department.

Firefighters work a 56-hour average work week using 3 rotating 24-hour work shifts.
Additionally, Firefighters are subject to callback during off-duty hours and must live within a 10-
mile radius of the Headquarters Fire Station.
